Course Overview

This module explores cardiac electrophysiology in depth. It gives students the knowledge and skills to support arrhythmia diagnosis and electrophysiological procedures.

Students will learn to interpret ECGs and intracardiac electrograms (EGMs). They will identify key arrhythmias and distinguish surface ECGs from EGMs. Study of cardiac anatomy, action potentials, and the physiology of conduction pathways will support their understanding of complex rhythm disorders.

Key topics include arrhythmia mechanisms, such as automaticity, triggered activity, and re-entry. Students will also study the clinical application of electrophysiology (EP).

Students will learn to perform and interpret pacing manoeuvres, refractory period measurements, and EP mapping techniques using fluoroscopy. They will study common arrhythmias in detail, including AVNRT, AVRT, WPW, and atrial fibrillation. This study will cover how these arrhythmias are induced and terminated.

The module also covers the pharmacology used in EP procedures, associated risks and complications, and the clinical rationale for investigation. Students will develop a strong foundation in interpreting EP data and supporting procedures with confidence.

Teaching

This campus-based module combines interactive lectures, seminars, and practitioner-led workshops. Students will explore core electrophysiology concepts and their clinical application.

They will examine real-world case studies, interpret intracardiac signals, and develop practical skills through problem-solving tasks. Online resources will support reflection, self-assessment, and further learning.

Assessment

Assessment is based on coursework and consists of a summative case-based workbook. Students will identify arrhythmias, justify appropriate procedures, and provide detailed, step-by-step guidance on intervention and troubleshooting.

Weekly EGM quizzes will provide formative feedback. This feedback will help students consolidate their knowledge and develop their clinical reasoning throughout the module.
