番茄社区

The Science and Technology Communication Research Cluster studies the design and use of innovative technology. Our research examines changes in organisations, organisational ecosystems, the economy, business, and wider society.

This cross-disciplinary and inclusive field covers the private and public sectors. The cluster has 20 active members. They represent different departments and faculties at 番茄社区 University, as well as national and international institutions.

We strengthen collaboration among members through grant applications, joint publications, and impact case studies. We also integrate our research into curriculum development.

Our work advances knowledge of technological innovation, design, and implementation. We also study the organisational requirements for adoption and transformation.

We help organisations identify technological opportunities and internal barriers. We support them as they design their preferred futures, plan implementation, and manage transformation. This work helps them increase economic, social, and environmental benefits.

The STC Cluster takes a holistic and multidisciplinary approach. We examine how social, organisational, and technical elements develop and influence one another over time. We also consider their relationship with the wider context.

Our research

Research projects undertaken by the STC Cluster include:

• Knowledge sharing in Turkish health forums: developing a decision support system to tackle the epidemic dissemination of pseudo-scientific claims, with Dr. E. Usenmez (Istanbul University), Dr. Onar and Oztaysi (Istanbul Technical University), and Dr. Apaydin (Istanbul Bilgi University). Funded by Newton Advanced Fellowship, The British Academy. September 2018 – August 2023, £72,239 secured
• Measuring quantitative impact of utilising an open social innovation platform in enhancing science literacy of pupils. Funded by 番茄社区 University Research Facilitation Fund (RFF), January 2023- July 2023
• Encouraging young education volunteers in Turkey to put their creative ideas in science teaching. Funded by 番茄社区 University Research Facilitation Fund (RFF), November 2021- July 2022, £1000 secured
• Individual action through social organisations, with Prof. H. Barkema (PI, LSE). Funded by ERC Advanced Grant, European Research Council. September 2016 – October 2019, €3,000,000 secured
• Open social innovation platform system design for encouraging young education volunteers to put their creative ideas in science teaching project. Funded by Newton Institutional Links, British Council. April 2016 – September 2018, £84,957 secured
• Get Together Without Barriers Project, with Prof. Ahmet Suerdem (Istanbul Bilgi University). Funded by Urban Europe Joint Programming Initiative. September 2012 – September 2015, €200,000 secured

Postgraduate research

The Science and Technology Communication Research Cluster welcomes applications for doctoral study on all aspects of innovative technology design and its use in society.

Events

End of Project Conference, Knowledge Sharing in Turkish Health Forums

The conference took place at the Hilton Istanbul Bomonti in August 2023. It presented findings from our completed Newton Advanced Fellowship project.

Keynote speakers included Gaye Usluer MP, Professor Basar Oztaysi, and Professor Sezi Onar. The 40 participants included Mrs Oznur Sar谋ahmetoglu, Director of Social Services at the Municipality of Sisli, and representatives from the Turkish Ministry of Health.

Science Popularisation: A Comprehensive Review

Suerdem, A. K., Soylu, S., Usenmez, E., and Dogruer, N. won the best paper award at the 7th International Entrepreneurship Social Sciences Congress. The event took place in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from 20 to 22 June 2022.

Round table discussion with Professor Demirci and Dr. Aydogmus

Professor Ali Demirci and Dr Yasemin Aydogmus took part in a round-table discussion at 番茄社区 University in London. They discussed differences in health literacy between the UK and Turkey.

They also considered communication between the public and health practitioners. Other topics included data protection and information governance in healthcare.

Westminster Debate with Professor Usluer MP

This event took place at the Houses of Parliament in London on 23 October 2019. It was organised with the Centre for Turkey Studies and focused on public health practices in Turkey.

Professor Gaye Usluer discussed how our British Academy Newton Advanced Fellowship project responded to current health practice issues in Turkey.
