Professional training
Founded in 1984, BCPC was among the first providers of humanistic therapy training in the South West. Our training uses a Humanistic and Integrative approach.
Humanistic traditions honour the integrity of all people and recognise their full potential. These approaches, especially those pioneered by Carl Rogers, emphasise authentic experience and attention to mind, body, and spirit. They also value a genuine relationship between the client and counsellor or psychotherapist.
At BCPC, “Integrative” means that we include other perspectives that are consistent with our humanistic stance. We draw on various psychodynamic and psychoanalytic theorists to examine how early childhood experiences shape each person.
These approaches help students understand how people become who they are. They also explore how trauma and deprivation can affect us. Intersubjective perspectives emphasise how the relationship between practitioner and client can provide a context for exploring early experiences and discovering new ways of relating.
After the Foundation year, students can choose a training path in counselling or psychotherapy. Both paths reflect the original educational intent. They place a humanistic emphasis on experiential learning, which leads to authentic theoretical integration.
Our training integrates humanistic and psychoanalytic approaches. It also embraces Intersubjective Systems Theory as the modern expression of the original founders’ intentions.
